Sprouted grains are one of the healthiest foods on the face of the earth. They support intestinal health with plenty of fiber and are full of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. It is important to note there is a huge difference between regular grains and sprouted grains beside just taste. When it comes to nutrient density, sprouted grains contain:
- Twice as many B vitamins including folate
- More protein and fiber
- Fewer starches
- Lower glycemic levels making it more suitable for those dealing with diabetes
- Food enzymes that aid in digestion
- Higher vitamin content
- Low in saturated fat
Sprouted grains encourage the growth of good bacteria, commonly known as probiotics that help keep the colon clean and offer plenty of antioxidants. They are high in Vitamins A and C, iron, potassium and phosphorus that are important for mental alertness and healthy bones and teeth.
Regular whole-grains like wheat can cause a mucus build-up when cooked leading to all sorts of allergic reactions, constipation, and can prevent the body from absorbing nutrients. Sprouted grains make it much easier for the body to break them down because they are converted to simple sugars so those intolerant to wheat are able to eat sprouted grains without any problems.
Flourless bread is made with grains and legumes that are sprouted BEFORE grinding them into flour. As a result, sprouted grains offer an increased vitamin and nutrient content because the seed is sprouted first which simply means it is alive and active during the growing process allowing the ground meal to retain their nutrients.
Nutrition bars made with sprouted grains have a very sweet taste offering a dense, moist texture because they are made without yeast plus sprouting changes some starches in grains to sugars giving a dessert-like flavor. Sprouted ingredients can be grown organically without pesticides and offer a low glycemic-index of 45 making them a perfect food for helping you stay full longer – an excellent weight loss tool.
Whole Grain Flour is a finely ground, powdery whole grain plant food stuff obtained by intentionally sprouting, sound, quality grain that is non-sprouted, and then milled into a finished whole grain product. The finished Sprouted Whole Grain Flour is the result of purposefully germinating the grain into a living plant. It is made from the entire grain, inclusive of bran, germ, and endosperm.
Sprouting a grain actually changes its composition from a starch to a vegetable. When whole grains are sprouted, they are converted into a more nutritious and digestible food. As the grain sprouts, it turns into a plant, and the body recognizes it as a vegetable. Vegetables are the easiest-to-digest food because they are broken down by vegetable enzymes, not pancreatic enzymes and are less abundant in most people’s digestive systems. The sprouting conversion happens when the sprout pierces the shell of the grain.
Once this process is complete, the body can digest the sprouted grains as a vegetable. Picture a grass seed that has begun to sprout into grass coming alive as a vegetable. The sprouted grass seed is then dried and milled into flour.
It is so nice to find a treat that isn’t full of bad stuff like bleached flour, processed sugar, and fat. Eating sprouted flour products are a great way to start your day on the right foot for healthy eating.

As Summer winds down and Fall begins, it’s time to start thinking about what you can do to boost your immune system for the upcoming cold-and-flu season. Looking through the Immune section at your local supplement store, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the choices you’re presented with. The purpose of this article is to narrow things down for you, so you can more easily find what you need to feel better.
There are a few questions you need to ask yourself before trying to decide on a good remedy. Are you looking for something for prevention so you don’t get sick in the first place, or are you already fighting something off? If you are already feeling sick, are the symptoms acute or chronic? And how long have you had the symptoms?
There are quite a few great products that are designed for acute symptoms. Anything containing elderberry, andrographis or echinacea would be good to try. Quick Defense from Gaia Herbs is a great formula that contains all three. Yin Chiao is a formula used in traditional Chinese medicine that is great for onset. Phytocillin from Herbs Etc is great as well, especially for lingering conditions that don’t seem to resolve on their own. Respiratonic is another great formula from the same company that is specific for acute lung conditions. Oscillococcinum is a well-known homeopathic remedy that is great for onset too. All of these products work best when taken immediately upon feeling symptoms. The earlier you catch it, the better off you’ll be. For chronic respiratory conditions, Herbs etc’s Lung Tonic would be a good choice, as would Clear Lungs by Ridgecrest Herbals.
Of course, none of these remedies should replace a trip to the doctor if you are dealing with a serious infection. But for milder symptoms, there are some great options available.
Finally, there are many products that can be taken for prevention. Many of them are designed for people to start using at the beginning of Fall. That way the immune system will be strong enough to fight off all the things it will be exposed to in the coming months. Some of our most popular products in this field would be Super Immuno-Tone from Integrative Therapeutics, Whole Body Defense from Gaia Herbs and Immuno-Shield from Irwin Naturals. There are also many mushroom-based products that are great for strengthening the immune system. Host Defense is a line from mushroom expert Paul Stamets. He has two formulas for general immune support: Stamets 7 and Mycommunity.
Even with all these great products, we have hardly scratched the surface. But hopefully it will be easier for you to narrow things down. Of course if you have any questions about these items or any other supplements, we here at Willner Chemists in Atlanta will be happy to answer them for you. Just stop by or call us at 404-266-9115.
Acid reflux is not just a symptom that needs a band aid medication or supplement but it can be viewed as a signal from the body that something you are doing is not agreeing with the way you’re body likes to function. People are so in a hurry to fix it and move on with their lives; rightfully so. It’s uncomfortable, it’s annoying, it interrupts sleep patterns and we have other things to tend to don’t we? Well, I invite you to take a deeper look in spite of all the ads and TV brainwashing that offers you another drug for your problem. Although alternative remedies seem like alot sometimes the key is to approach it one step at a time so you can feel you’re way.
When I ask people what their diet is like, the nutrition response I often hear is “I am eating well” I eat fruits , veggies etc. etc.” What does that exactly mean if your’e body does not respond by feeling well. You are not what you eat you are what you absorb and digest! Very simple food combining can be a real contribution to acid reflux as well as the amount of acidic foods you are eating and WHEN.. when is key here. For example in America fruit is served after dinner and other meals as well. According to experts in food combining, fruit should be eaten alone and first thing in the morning as it requires strong digestion. So upon waking is best to eat a peice of fruit , like papaya or mango after drinking a glass or two of water with lemon soaked in from the night before. This starts the digestive tract with an alkaline environment. Ayurvedic medicine, science of health from India does not recommend eating fruit with grains, a popular combo here in the western diet. This sugar environment in the gut becomes a perfect place for tumors and cancer to grow. Cancer feeds off sugar. We all have yeast, but certain food combinations create more.
An understanding of which foods are acidic and which are alkaline is crucial. A simple diet that includes millet, quinoa, dark green leafy veggies, basmati rice, ghee, sea vegetables like kelp and nori, split mung beans for protein along with a few others you can find in a food combining book is great to give your body a new start and a rest from rich proteins which are mostly eaten at night in the American diet. Eating light after 6pm like a veggie soup with lentils is key for digestion. In this way people won’t feel like they need to cleanse all the time. the body will be doing this naturally because it won’t be overburdened with rich food combinations.
Another problem people often have with digestion is starchy foods with protein foods. A pasta dinner should be eaten alone with veggies and some organic chicken but the meat and potatoes combo which is very popular like burger and fries wreak havoc on digestion over time. Keep your protein with veggies or salad.
In this way you will not only feel better and reduce acid but this can reduce inflammation, joint problems as these are all results of undigested food and on top of that you will keep your weight down. It’s really simple. If you shop the farm markets and enjoy simple organic food, local and seasonal you are on you are way to better health and vitality.Treat yourself like a temple and holy place. Because you are. Everyone is a part of the great universal consciousness that exists. So as we each do our parts and align ourselves with our highest purpose, leaving out indulgence and overconsumption both internally and externally we are contributing to a better world. Having good thoughts and surrounding ourselves with family and friends is another great pillar of health. Looking at the whole picture not just the symptom, being honest with ourselves , slowing down enough so we can pay attention, which pain is a signal for, and realizing we can make simple changes and choices daily that will affect our health over time. In the same way you would not expect to run a marathon first time out running, taking baby steps each day in you’re food choices, thoughts, relationships and all this can significantly effect the way you feel.
In the meantime as you are making these changes and also incorporating some fermented foods in you’re diet like Kefir, raw sauerkraut, you can shop Willner Chemists for the following:
The Body Ecology Book
Aloe Vera Juice- drink an ounce several times a day for indigestion

Recorded evidence of olive leaf’s medicinal use dates back thousands of years; it was used by ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean cultures and was referenced by Hippocrates. Today, olive leaf has sparked a significant resurgence because of its remarkable antioxidant properties and its ability to support a healthy immune system, so critical during cold and flu season.
Olive trees live for thousands years, resisting attacks from pests, drought and a range of microorganisms. What is their secret? Olive has a phenomenal defense system composed of hundreds of powerful broad-spectrum, naturally occurring antioxidant compounds. Olive Leaf Complex comes in a concentrated liquid extract made directly from fresh olive leaves that has an antioxidant capacity almost double that of green tea extract and 400 percent higher than Vitamin C with an amazingly high ORAC value of 7600 per dose.
Unleash the extraordinarily potent anti-aging, antioxidant, pro-immune system benefits of olive leaf today! Available here at Willner Chemist, your nutritional supplement professionals.
So we all know about the great benefits of echinacea when it comes to respiratory and immune function. To maximize these benefits it is recommended to begin echinacea a few months in advance. Like most herbs it takes time for the body to adapt and repair. It is not like a drug that works overnight on the symptom and does not address the cause.
Today I would like to introduce to you the herb Astragulus . It is a root that is highly recommended to prepare for the flu season as it acts as a tonic to protect the immune system. It also aids adrenal gland function and increases digestion and metabolism, promotes healing, and provides energy to combat fatigue and prolonged stress. It increases stamina. Don’t we all need that?? Good for colds, flu and immune deficiency related problems, including AIDS, cancer and tumors. Effective for chronic lung weakness.
Willner Chemists carries Astragulus in the NOW Brand, Planetary Herbs and Gaia.

Yes it’s still quite hot but the mornings and evenings are starting to cool off which means Fall is on the way and in Atlanta that means allergies. However, don’t despair. There are natural remedies that can help to modulate the immune system’s inflammatory response. Stinging nettle has a long history of use and has been shown in vitro to inhibit the synthesis of arachidonic acid and leukotrienes, two key inflammatory markers. A study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research in 2009 demonstrated in the laboratory that the nettle leaf also blocks histamine receptors. The unique bioflavonoid quercetin has also been shown to effect histamine. In human cell culture studies, quercetin has been shown to actually inhibit histamine release.
Here at Willner Chemist we have several products that contain one or both of these amazing natural compounds. Come by today and let our knowledgeable staff help you decide which one of our allergy products is right for you.
According to the Ayurvedic system of healing and balance, the best time to cleanse our bodies is at the junction between two seasons. We do have some time here in Atlanta as it still remains hot throughout August and even into September. But still good to think of some things to support detoxification now as there is a tendency in the West to barbeque heavy proteins in the summer such as chicken , meat and fish. Not only do those foods when barbqued have carcinogens, they are difficult to digest in 100 degree weather especially in the evening. The best time to eat meat is the morning meal or lunch when digestive fire is at it’s peak. You want to have at least three hours of digestive time before going to sleep.
Here’s a short list of some detoxifying remedies to begin as we approach fall:
Aloe Vera Juice- drink a few ounces a day to cool the digestive tract
Ginger capsules- good for all constitutions in Ayurveda- promotes good digestion
Triphala- an Ayurvedic remedy that one can use indefinitely to cleans the colon- comes in powder for tea or capsules
Getting regular massage
Dry brushing the skin for circulation and exfoliating the skin
Sweating such as taking saunas
Enemas- as directed by your physician
The perfect food for cleansing is Kitchari- it a complete protein food made from split mung beans , rice, and vegetables. One can eat this as a meal three times a day while cleansing. Recipes are found in The Ayurvedic Cookbook.
As the leaves begin to fall from the trees think of the whole body in the same way needing to get rid of accumulated toxins and cleanse before the next season begins. If we mirror nature we can remain healthy with the seasons.

If you are like me and enjoy traveling but fret getting on an airplane, here are some Safe and Effective remedies for pre travel, during travel and apre’s travel.
For starters, before taking a long airplane trip Rescue Remedy by Bach is a gentle and effective calming liquid ( which comes in less than 4oz size for airplane security). Made from the essences of flowers, rescue remedy is both safe for humans , adults and children. One can immediately feel the calming effects and not have to wait like some homeopathic remedies. It can address anxiety, tension, nervousness and uneasiness about traveling. I have both personally and professionally used it for over 25 years. It’s a must in the home health kit and cosmetic pouch. I’ve also used it countless times in situations when other people might need some as well. Just take a dropperfull under the tongue several times a day or as needed.Kids respond so well to Rescue Remedy. I gave it to our sheepdog when we moved cross country when he was in the baggage pit in his crate on an airplane.
Hyland’s Jet Lag Homeopathic tabs or Kin Bio Jet Lag spray are both efficient in easing jet lag particularly when traveling to different time zones. Best to start either of these a day or two before traveling and also while on an airplane as well as a day after you reach your destination. Just a few sprays under the tongue every few hours will help.
\Melatonin is the perfect remedy for sleeping on an airplane as well as time zone differences. It comes in a travel size liquid , tablets or sublingual tabs.
For apres travel ;some good yoga postures that help with jet lag are shavasana- corpse pose, and lying on the floor throwing your feet over the top of the bed ( your body like an L shape allowing the blood to recirculate and the nervous system to calm down. Try a few standing poses to ground your energy.
I like to travel with some Smoothe Move Tea or extra fiber caps as traveling can often be constipating. Continuing your Triphala supplement from Ayurveda is great as we often eat more rich and heavy foods when we travel and Triphala will help to cleanse the colon as well as keep the bowels regular.
At this point just relax and enjoy your trip.. and oops don’t forget your eco-flo water filter bottle!!
You don’t want any unsafe microbials in your water.. especially over the border!!

Chia seed, an ancient Aztec grain, is a powerful super food. Ancient Aztec warriors prized chia seeds as an endurance promoting super food, eating it in bread just before battle, while messengers would drink it in water before running long distances. Once for once, chia seeds contain more antioxidants than blueberries, more fiber than bran flakes, five times the calcium of milk, double the potassium of bananas, triple the iron of spinach and more protein, fiber and calcium than flax seeds. They are loaded with high-oRAC antioxidants like quercetin, myrecetin, cafffeic acid and chlorogenic acid and are rich in calcium, potassium, iron, zinc and many trace minerals and supply a biologically complete protein. Due to its high fiber content (more than 35%) chia seed has the remarkable ability to absorb ten times its weight in water, making it an excellent source of hydration. Chia’s solueable fiber slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream, binds to toxins in the digestive system and helps to eliminate excess waste. Mix in lemonade or fruit juice for a refreshing, performance-enhancing chia fresca energy drink or try this delicious Banana Coconut Chia Pudding:
2 ripe bananas
1 cup coconut water
2 Tbsp chia seeds
Grind the chia seeds in a high speed blender. Add the bananas and coconut water and blend until creamy. Take the mixture out of the blender and allow to thicken. Yields one serving.
The 3000-year old natural energy source of the Aztecs is now available to you too, right here at Willner Chemist!
